Jennifer Engel
Jennifer Engel is the Associate Vice President, Education Abroad at Indiana University, responsible for outbound student mobility for the IU system. Previously she served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs & Experiential Learning at CIS Abroad-Center for International Studies, providing leadership in the areas of student learning and assessment; curriculum, program and partnership development; and innovation in education abroad. Prior to taking on this role, Jennifer served as the Executive Director of International Programs (Senior International Officer) at Loyola University Chicago. There she was responsible for partnership cultivation, program development, and general administration as well as the functional areas of: education abroad; international student and scholar services; English as a second language; the International House living-learning community; the Chicago Center program; and enrollment management and support for the University's Global Centers in Rome and Vietnam.
Prior to her appointment at Loyola, Jennifer was the Executive Director of Global Learning at the University of South Carolina. In that role, her primary responsibilities included policy and program development; safety and risk management; assessment and strategic planning for education abroad; and campus internationalization. Jennifer also taught Spanish, coordinated the Modern Languages unit within the Department of English and Modern Languages, and developed the study abroad program for Marygrove College.
Jennifer earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy from the University of South Carolina, with an emphasis on international higher education and a cognate in anthropology. She received her M.A. in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and her B.A. in Spanish and International Relations from Alma College. Her research interests include the impact of education abroad on minority and first-generation college students and the effects of U.S. American study abroad students on their host cultures. In 2014, she was awarded an Endeavour Fellowship by the Australian Department of Education and Training, which supported her research on the Australian higher education system - focusing on the governmental and institutional policies and structures that support international education.
Jennifer has been involved with the Association of International Education Administrators, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and the Forum on Education Abroad in various capacities, holding leadership positions, presenting at regional, national and international levels, and mentoring newcomers to the field.
