Background
Both teams had won their respective pools to qualify for the knockout stage as 3rd (London Wasps) and 4th (Leicester Tigers) seeds, thereby securing home quarter-finals. The semi-finals were played at neutral venues; Tigers beat the Llanelli Scarlets 33–17 at Walkers Stadium in Leicester, while Wasps defeated Northampton Saints 30–13 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The all-English final at the home of English rugby in Twickenham Stadium attracted a then-record Heineken Cup attendance.
