The 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup Final was a football match to determine the winners of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. The match was held at Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg, South Africa, on 28 June 2009 and was contested by the United States and Brazil. Despite being two goals down at half-time, Brazil won the match 3–2, with Lúcio scoring the winning goal six minutes from full-time.[3][4]
The match marked the first ever appearance for the United States in the final of a FIFA men's competition (the US has won FIFA women's titles at senior and U-20 levels). It was Brazil's fourth appearance in a Confederations Cup final (after 1997, 1999 and 2005).
Prior to the match, FIFA honoured Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé, who died of a heart-related disease during a FIFA Confederations Cup match in 2003. One of his three children, Marc-Scott, read a commemorative message towards the memory of his father.[5]
