Summer Games

Brunei competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012.

Brunei was the only member country of the International Olympic Committee not to participate in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing; it had intended to do so, but was expelled on the day of the opening ceremony after failing to register any athletes.[2] The country thus made its return to the Olympic Games in 2012.

In the months prior to the London Games, Brunei attracted some media attention as it was pointed out that it was one of only three countries—along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar—never to have sent a female athlete to the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said it would "press" all three countries to do so, and in March 2012 Brunei submitted its list of eligible athletes, which included a woman, nineteen-year-old hurdler and 400-metre runner Maziah Mahusin. Although Mahusin was unlikely to meet the qualifying standards for the Games, she would be able to compete thanks to the Olympics' principle of universality, which states that "NOCs have the possibility of entering unqualified athletes in athletics and swimming should they not have athletes qualified in these sports".[3][4] Brunei subsequently confirmed Mahusin would be part of its delegation.[5] Brunei, however, has yet to earn its first Olympic medal.
