Emeritus Professors in India are scholar extraordinaires who have been awarded the Emeritus Fellowship by the University Grants Commission, India. Usually the Fellowship is awarded to outstanding scholars from any subjects of the academia who have reached the official retirement age in India, but are still capable to contribute substantially the academic communities of the country. Emeritus Professors thus remain associated with their respective universities in India and also receive a special honorarium which is higher than the retirement pensions and other benefits.

In any given time, there are very few Emeritus Professors in India. Emeritus Professors were earlier known in India as National Professors. Unlike the universities in the U.K. and U.S.A., in India Emeritus Fellowships are awarded by the Government of India's University Grants Commission, rather than individual universities. The University Grants Commission, headquartered in the Indian capital New Delhi and having branches all over India, is the authority for governmental recognition and funding of all Indian higher education colleges and universities.
