Petty corruption remains a problem in Sri Lanka, and weak whistleblower protections have negative impacts on citizen's willingness to stand up against corruption. Despite some recent institutional reforms by the government in order to fight corruption, whistleblower protections need to be improved.[1]

For business, Sri Lanka's public procurement is one of the sectors where corruption is most prevalent, and companies reported to have paid some kind of unofficial payments in order to secure public contracts. Cumbersome bureaucracy creates opportunities for officials to extort facilitation payments from businesses if they wish to speed things up.[2]
