Daisai is a village in the East Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. This village is situated at five kilometers away from a sub divisional town of Purba Medinipur, named Contai or Kanthi on Contai Mecheda Road.
Etymology
The actual name of this village was Dadhi Patna which was then under the Bahiri Mutha Pargana. There is a story of how this village has got its name, “Daisai”. Due to the water scarcity and saline ground water, every family of this village had their own pond. When a newly wedded son of a villager wanted to start a family with his wedded bride separately, his father wanted to gift him a pond and he hired a few digger, who can dig a pond for his son. After a few days of digging, they discovered a huge wooden structure. They could not recognize the structure as the most of the structure was still hidden on the earth. But, day by day as they uncovered the wooden structure they found gold and silver coins, idols and precious gems beside it. Finally, when the wooden structure unearthed, everybody could recognize the huge structure. It was the main supporting arm of a ship. It was known as “Sai” to the villagers in their native language. From then village got its new name, from Dadhi to “Dai” and from supporting arm to “Sai”, Daisai.
Economy
Till the year 2000, small scale industry as Iron made home utensils were manufactured that gave employment to many villagers. After the year 2000, these industries were sick and shutdown causing unemployment. Since income from agricultural land was not sufficient for dwelling, many villagers migrated to different parts of India for their livellyhood.
An Agricultural Credit Society (Daisai Krishi Unnyan Samiti Ltd.) was formed in 1952 by Kalipada Paria, and his two friends, Gobinda Prasad Mandal and Bhuthanath Ghorai. That society is the only source of loans to the villagers and it also performs banking activities.
