Background
Declan Finn (born March 21, 1982) is an American author of science fiction, fantasy, thriller, vampire romance, and nonfiction. He is mostly an independent author, self publishing many of his books, though several have later been picked up by other publishers. Finn has published seven works of fiction, a collection of short stories, a collection of nonfiction essays, and a history of Irish Rebel Songs.
Finn is also the host of The Catholic Geek Radio Show on the We Built That Network, hosted on BlogTalkRadio. His work Honor at Stake received a nomination for Best Horror novel in the first annual Dragon Award at Dragon Con.
Early Life
Declan Finn grew up in Queens NY, and continues to live there to this day. Finn would go to St. John's University and major in history, because “it's a source of stories,” claiming for inspiration Professor William D. Griffin. His work at St. John's would inform much of his later work, including The Pius Trilogy, where he utilized his research under both Griffin as well as Konrad Tuchscherer.
Finn went on toward a PhD in history. He completed all course work, but left due to being fed up with academic politics.
Writing Career
After working with two agents and getting nowhere, Finn ultimately decided to self publish. His first published novel was It Was Only on Stun! He followed it up in 2013 with Codename: Winterborn, coauthored with Allan Yoskowitz.
Later, The Pius Trilogy leveraged work he'd done in graduate school about Pope Pius XII. The Trilogy contains themes of secularism versus religion, the place of religious thought in the modern age, and the politics of globalism versus faith.
In 2015 Eternal Press published his urban fantasy novel Honor at Stake, which would later be nominated for a Dragon Award. After Calibum Books purchased Eternal Press, Finn parted ways with his publisher and re-released it himself.
In 2016 Silver Empire signed Finn for a five book deal to republish his Pius Trilogy and related works.
Since then, Finn self-published three sequels to Honor at Stake. The second sequel, Love at First Bite, was nominated for a Dragon Award in 2017. The sequel to Codename: Winterborn, Codename: UnSub, was also a Dragon Award finalist in 2017, under the now-discontinued category of "Best Apocalypse." After book four of the Love at First Bite series (originally called the Honor at Stake series) was released, Silver Empire also signed Finn to republish the earlier books in the series.
In 2017, Finn started the Saint Tommy, NYPD series, which was published under Silver Empire.
In 2021, Finn worked with Robert Kroese to found Upstream Reviews, a review site dedicated to non-woke fiction, only reviewing good books, and the occasional entertainment news. It went from WordPress to Substack. ( https://upstreamreviews.substack.com )
When Silver Empire Press closed its business in 2022, Finn was picked up by three publishers. Three Ravens Press took the Love at First Bite series, the burgeoning Conservatarian Press took The Pius Trilogy, and Tuscany Bay Books took the Saint Tommy NYPD series, who reprinted all eight of the previously released novels, but also released the final four in the series. Tuscany Bay is also publishing Finn’s space opera series, White Ops.
After burying his father in 2023, Finn moved to Texas where he is working on expanding his body of work, writing scripts, and collecting a small arsenal.
Controversy
In 2015 Finn became enmeshed in the Sad Puppies campaign with the publication of his blog post, "Cry Havoc and Let Slip the Puppies of War," later republished in the magazine Liberty Island. A later series of blog posts entitled "Sad Puppies Bite Back" lampooned the events of Sad Puppies 3. In 2016 he edited the collection into the self published satire, Sad Puppies Bite Back, including additional material.
Podcast Career
In 2015, Finn started The Catholic Geek Radio Show podcast, in association with the newly founded The Catholic Geeks blog. His guests have run the range from musicians and authors to artists and lawyers. Guests of note have included Moira Greyland Peat, Vox Day, John C. Wright, L. Jagi Lamplighter, Brad Torgersen, Ann Margaret Lewis, Karina Fabian, and Brian Niemeier. Topics are, as noted in the radio show format, “Whatever the guests want to talk about,” and have ranged from international politics and military sciences, to books, music and food.
