Deerfield Beach High School is nationally ranked for its academic achievements throughout the years. Most notably, the school features the IB Middle Years Programme or Pre-IB, which is a prerequisite for the International Baccalaureate program that offers college-level academics to many of Broward County's most talented students in 11th and 12th grade.[3] In a typical year, Deerfield's International Baccalaureate graduates matriculate at some of the nation's top universities. For example, in recent years several graduates have attended Ivy League universities. Moreover, Deerfield has historically been a leader among Broward County schools in terms of the number of students winning prestigious Silver Knight Awards.[4] The graduation rate for the 2014-2015 academic year stood at 79.0% compared to the 74.5% state average and the 81.0% national average.[5] In that same year, students scored an average of 1590 out of 2400 on the SAT (compared with a national average of 1720) and a 22 out of 36 (compared with a national average of 26) on the ACT.[6] Deerfield Beach High has an FCAT school grade of "A" for the 2014-2015 academic school year.[7]

CBA Magnet Program

Deerfield High is one of only two schools in Broward County to have a Magnet Program in Communications and Broadcast Arts. The school receives state funding that they can use to procure the latest in journalistic equipment. The program has three specializations that students can choose to pursue after completing at least one class in each (known as the "Magnet Wheel").

Television News

The Television Department has a fully functional TV Newsroom and several computer editing machines. FEMA and Vice-President (at the time) Al Gore did a special broadcast from the school's newsroom about hurricane awareness. The program produces a daily news show which covers all the school's news and athletics. Students learn to produce news stories as well as reporting and news anchoring.

Radio News

The Radio Department also has a full function radio broadcasting room, which broadcasts programming several hours a day (mainly a few hours before and after school). Students learn the ins and outs of radio broadcasting, both reporting and producing radio shows.

Graphic Arts

The Graphic Arts department has two computer labs with a great deal of advanced graphical editing equipment. This department produces the school's yearbook as well as a video yearbook, in conjunction with the Television News Department. This group also is primarily responsible for the school's website, Deerfield Beach High School.

The program wins several awards from the Florida Scholastic Press Association [FSPA] on an annual basis. FSPA Districts for Fall District 7 Workshop are held at Deerfield Beach High School every year. http://fspadistrict7.com

International Baccalaureate program

Deerfield Beach High is one of only three schools in Broward County to have an International Baccalaureate diploma program. Acceptance into this magnet program is transitionary from the IB Middle Years Program. Acceptance into the IB MYP program is based on academic performance. Among other screening requirements, students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and FCAT reading/mathematics scores of 4 or higher.[13]

Components

The IB Diploma Program provides a rigorous and robust education. Students are expected to "test out" with a score of 4 or higher in at least three higher level courses and three standard level courses, take the Theory of Knowledge classes, complete the IB Extended essay, and complete a requisite number of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) hours per semester. Courses for which students must test out are offered at either Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL).[14]
