Dorsa Derakhshani is an 18 year old Iranian chess grandmaster who came to fame after being banned from the Iranian national team for not wearing a hijab – obligatory dress for women under Iranian law. She was expelled while competing as an independent player in the 2017 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival.

Dorsa obtained her International Master and Woman Grandmaster titles in 2016.

Born Tehran, IRan

Her story was shared by various centrists and moderate rightists who claimed that her actions made a her a "true feminist", as opposed to the Swedish government who all donned hair-scarfs when meeting with president Rouhani.

Belgium-based Iranian gender discrimination activist Darya Safai tweeted:

“Dorsa to me is the true feminist, not the Swedish government parading with the headscarf with [President of Iran Hassan] Rouhani,”

One person claimed that she was fighting "the real war".

The problem with this narrative is that she has no children and will probably never have children, being a feminist living the west. The people forcing their women to wear headscarves will on average have more children then her, so they will dominate the future while she will not.
