History
Five Points Mall opening in 1978 as North Park Mall. One of its original anchor stores was Hills Department Store, which became Ames in 1998. Other early tenants included a Hank's Supermarket (which later became part of Lance's New Market) and H. P. Wasson and Company, which became Meis, then Elder-Beerman, and finally Carson's in 2011. Sears was later added. The movie theater, also an original tenant, closed in the late 1990s. In 2013, the Sears closed as a result of low sales of the 2011 holiday season.
On January 15, 2014, J.C. Penney announced it was closing 33 underperforming stores (including the Marion store located in this mall) and laying off 2,000 employees.[3] CEO Myron Ullman explained in a news release, “As we continue to progress toward long-term profitable growth, it is necessary to reexamine the financial performance of our store portfolio and adjust our national footprint accordingly.”[4]
