Fort Hamer, Florida

Fort Hamer is an unincorporated area in Manatee County, Florida, United States, and was the name of a short-lived U.S. Army fort in Eastern Manatee County. Construction of the Fort Hamer Bridge over the Manatee River was being planned in 2014.[1]
Overview
There is also a Fort Hamer Park.[2] A site for the bridge was opposed in 2003 by tribal groups.[3][4] The area is also being developed with training facilities for rowers.[4]
The U.S. Army's Fort Hamer was constructed on the south bank of the Manatee River near Gates Creek and included approximately six log buildings including housing for 165 men, a mess hall, hay barn and hospital. It was abandoned within a year after it was built.[5]
