Gaylesville is a town in Cherokee County, Alabama, United States. The population was 144 at the 2010 census.

History

Gaylesville is named for George W. Gayle, an Alabama politician. However, Gayle may also be the name of a local Cherokee Indian. A post office has been in operation in Gaylesville since 1836.

Geography

Gaylesville is located in northeast Cherokee County at 34°16'4.778" North, 85°33'29.678" West (34.267994, -85.558244), on the north side of the Chattooga River where it enters Weiss Lake.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.35 square miles (0.9 km²), all land.

There were 61 households out of which 21.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Education

Gaylesville is served by Gaylesville School (PK-12), home of the Trojans, which is a member of the Cherokee County School System.

Gaylesville Public Schools are part of the Cherokee County School District. Schools in the district include Cedar Bluff School, Centre Elementary School, Gaylesville School, Sand Rock School, Centre Middle School, Cherokee County High School, Spring Garden High School and Cherokee County Career & Technology Center.

Mitchell Guice is the Superintendent of Schools.
