Green Flash Brewing Co. is a craft brewery headquartered in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego, California. It was founded by Mike and Lisa Hinkley in 2002 in Carlsbad, California[1] before moving to its San Diego location in May 2011.[2] As of 2015 it was the fourth largest brewery in San Diego County and the 41st largest craft brewery in the United States, based on number of barrels brewed, brewing 82,000 per year.[3]

Green Flash made trailblazing steps in the craft brewing industry by acquiring Alpine Beer Company (Alpine, CA), distributing in all 50 states, and partnering with St. Feuillien to brew West Coast IPA in Europe. [4]

History

Green Flash Brewing Company opened its doors in 2002 at a 25 barrel brewing facility in Vista, CA. By 2005, Chuck Silva had been brought on as Brewmaster and Green Flash had created it’s first medal winning beer: Green Flash First Anniversary Ale.

By 2007, Green Flash had defined a beer style when they introduced, West Coast IPA. After racking up medals for Ruby Red Ale, Nut Brown Ale, and Extra Pale Ale, Green Flash decided to enter a new area of craft beer when they began their barrel aging program and created a house strain of Brettanomyces.

By 2010 Green Flash had created a new beer style in Le Freak, a Belgian Trippel/Imperial IPA hybrid, created the cult classic Palate Wrecker IPA, and released their first barrel aged beer: Super Freak. Hop Head Red, Extra Pale Ale, and Trippel were medal winners at GABF and World Beer cup competitions during this time.

By 2013 Green Flash had moved their production facility to a 50 barrel capacity brew house in Mira Mesa, CA. An instant fan favorite, Rayon Vert was introduced in this time to become one of the first nationally distributed Brettanomyces beers. Green Flash also collaborated with Belgian brewer St. Feuillien to brew Biere De L’Amitie marking the first US/Belgian brewing collaboration.

By 2014, Green Flash had made large strides by acquiring Alpine Beer Company (Alpine, CA), distributing in all 50 states, and partnering with St. Feuillien again to brew West Coast IPA in Europe. In 2015 a second location, Cellar 3, was opened to serve as a barrel- aging facility and tasting room in Poway, CA, and later that year Chuck Silva transitioned out of Green Flash Brewing Co and Head Brewer, Erik Jensen, was appointed Brewmaster.

In 2016 Green Flash will be opening a brewery and tasting room in Virginia Beach, VA.

Treasure Chest Program

In 2011 Green Flash co-founder and breast cancer survivor, Lisa Hinkely, began Green Flash’s Treasure Chest program. This annual charity program includes a special beer release in conjunction with a nation wide events program, and is kicked off with the annual Treasure Chest Festival at the Mira Mesa brewery. This program has raised over $200,000 for various regional breast cancer charities.
