Harrisburg University of Science & Technology is a four-year private non-profit university in Pennsylvania's capital, Harrisburg. The school was founded in 2001, opened its doors in 2005, and first accredited in 2009. As of January 11, 2016, the University has 400 undergraduate, 2,600 graduate students and 150 full and part-time faculty and staff. Although regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the university is currently on probation.

Academics and student life

Harrisburg University has 7 undergraduate and 4 graduate programs in science and technology related disciplines. The university follows a trimester system.

The University partners with many local civic organizations for student clubs and activities, such as the Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP). HU students receive free membership in the organization,[6] which involves students in various community programs.

The university only has 1 academic building. Although the school does not have a cafeteria, students in the housing have complete kitchens in each room. Many often eat at Strawberry Square, a food court and shopping area located close by the school. The university's academic center along with housing are all located in urban downtown Harrisburg. The university is within walking distance of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, which provides numerous cultural events for students.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology partners with Brickbox Enterprises, Ltd. to provide high-quality, affordable undergraduate student housing in downtown Harrisburg. Any enrolled undergraduate student at Harrisburg University is eligible to apply to live in University-partnered housing. All leasing, billing and maintenance are managed by Property Management, Incorporated. The University provides residence life services with HU partnered housing. All new, first-time students are encouraged to live on-campus at Residences On Market or Market View Place.

Accreditation

Harrisburg University regionally accreditation is accredited by Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, put the university on probation in June 26, 2014. In issuing the probation, the MSCHE cited "insufficient evidence that it is currently in compliance with Standard 3 (Institutional Resources) and Standard 14 (Assessment of Student Learning)."[7] The university is on-track to have the probation status lifted as of March 30, 2016; an MSCHE visit in November has already found that "the institution is now in compliance with Standard 3 (Institutional Resources) | title = Middle States Commission on Higher Education: Harrisburg University of Science and Technology: Statement of Accreditation Status [but that] the institution remains on probation pending ... compliance with Standard 14 (Assessment of Student Learning)."[7] Request was made by the MSCHE for additional documentation, demonstrating Harrisburg University's compliance with Standard 14, due January 8, 2016.[7]

Program offerings are authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Postsecondary and Adult Education, 333 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17126.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission granted approval of an authorization to operate at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center for the Master of Science in Learning Technologies and Master of Science in Information Systems Engineering and Management degree programs.

Approved to participate in the federal Title IV, HEA student assistance programs by the U.S. Department of Education, 7th & D Streets, SW, Washington, DC 20202.

Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for veterans and eligible dependents to obtain education benefits through the Veteran’s Administration (VA).

Approved by the Veterans Administration to participate in the “Yellow Ribbon” program.

Authorized under federal law by the Department of Homeland Security – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (DHS-USICE) as an eligible institution for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to enroll non-immigrant students.

An articulation agreement with another institution of higher education permits students enrolled in certain associate degree programs to transfer credits into specific degree programs at the university. The university has articulation agreement with the following institutions: Harrisburg Area Community College; Community College of Baltimore County; Lehigh Carbon Community College; Hussian School of Art. Additional articulation agreements are being pursued with various institutions of higher education.

A consortium agreement with another institution of higher education allows a student to remain enrolled at the university while also taking credits at the visiting institution. The university has a consortium agreement for certain nanobiotechnology courses with The Pennsylvania State University – University Park Campus, and, the university has a consortium agreement for certain computer science courses with Saint Francis University.

Price of Attendance 2015-2016

Full-time undergraduate tuition charges of $11,950 are for 12 to 17 semester hours. An undergraduate student who registers for more than 17 semester hours is subject to additional tuition costs at the per-semester hour rate (for example, tuition charged for 18 semester hours will be $11,950 + $1000 or $12,950). An undergraduate student who registers for 11 semester hours or fewer is charged the per semester hour rate multiplied by the number of registered semester hours. The domestic graduate tuition rate is $800 per credit hour.
