As an amateur he fought at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the men's welterweight division, won a Silver medal at the European Championships 2008 and the Gold at the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships representing Germany. Amateur career
Culcay Keth who starts for TG 75 Darmstadt was relatively unknown in 2007, not even German titleholder and had only a second place finish at the Chemistry Cup tournament 2007 to his credit when he was sent to the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships. But while all the German topfighters exited early he and middleweight Konstantin Buga were the only ones to reach the quarterfinal qualify for Beijing.
