Kate Lee (born Kate Lee Gurnow in 1992)[2] is an American singer, songwriter, fiddler from Webster, New York, known for composing the theme song, "When You Dream," for the Granting Dreams Foundation,[3] a Nashville-based organization that was developed to help terminally ill individuals of all ages live their dreams. She also wrote "Missing in the Mirror" for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Her sound is best described as Americana music, strongly influenced by country, folk, and bluegrass genres.

As at June 2012, she is using her legal name as her professional name.[4]

Early life

Lee started playing violin at age nine. Her teachers exposed her to both classical and Americana fiddle music. At age eleven she was asked by Jack Metzger from the Fiddlers of the Genessee to form a group with him, "Kate Lee with No Strings Attached" in which she sang, played violin, and eventually performed her own original material. The band roster includes Chuck Boda, Ben Ford, and John Irvine.[5]

She attended Webster Schroeder High School.[6]

Major achievements

  • 2009: Winner of Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), Search for a Star competition. Original song Adapted for RPO[1][6][7][8]
  • 2008: Grand Prize Winner (one of three) of Upstate New York Songwriting Contest, for "Beige"[9]
  • 2008: Americana Song Prize Winner of Upstate New York Songwriting Contest, for "On Your Way"[9]
  • 2008: Selected for performance on PBS WXXI’s television, On Stage performance, featuring Kate Lee with No Strings Attached[10]
  • 2008: Selected as Teen Correspondent for Bluegrass Blog (international website) for editorials[11]
  • 2008: scholarship award recipient for Heritage Augusta, Davis Elkins, Fiddler/Bluegrass workshop, where she learned from Bluegrass Fiddle Legend, Bobby Hicks
  • 2007: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Severino Award for Future Women Leaders of America
  • 2007: National Publishing Award for Great New Authors, for original song, "Are We There Yet?"

Current life

Kate Lee is currently a Senior at Belmont University in Nashville Tennessee, majoring in Commercial Violin Performance. She continues to tour with her band, Kate Lee with No Strings Attached.[4]
