Louis Jean Bertier de Sauvigny (27 March 1709 – 23 August 1788), also known as the Viscount of Tharot, was a French magistrate and administrator.

Biography

Louis Jean Bertier de Sauvigny was born in Paris, the son of Louis-Bénigne Bertier de Sauvigny (1676–1745), president of the Parliament of Paris and gentleman of the venery of the Duke of Orléans, and of Jeanne Orry (1685–1739), sister of Philibert Orry, Controller-General of Finances of Louis XV from 1730 to 1745. In 1736 he married Louise Bernarde Durey d'Arnoncourt, daughter of the farmer-general and man of letters Pierre Durey d'Harnoncourt and Françoise de La Marque. Mme Bertier de Sauvigny was the first cousin of Marguerite Durey de Vieuxcourt (1700–1729) who married René Hérault (1691–1740), lieutenant general of police and short-lived intendant of the généralité of Paris.

He was intendant of the généralité of Moulins, then of Grenoble before being appointed intendant of the generality of Paris in 1744. He held this position until 1776.

Between 1771 and 1774, during the period of the Maupeou reform, he was also the first president of the Parliament of Paris. His son Louis Bénigne François Bertier de Sauvigny (1737–1789) succeeded him at the head of the généralité of Paris.
