Maba people
From Infogalactic: the planetary knowledge core
Maba is an ethnic minority in Chad and Sudan.[1] They have also been referred to as the Waidaian. Their population is estimated at several hundred thousand, specifically 300,000 or more. They are subdivided into the Marfa, Djene and Mandaba.[2]
The vast majority of them belong to Islam. By some accounts, they are the most educated people in Chad, and were the first people in Chad to convert to Islam. They founded the Ouaddai Empire in the 15th century. They speak Maba, a Nilo-Saharan language, of the Maban branch.
