Marcelo Backes (born 1973) is a Brazilian writer, translator and literary critic.

Biography

Marcelo Backes was born at Campina das Missões in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He has a master's degree in Brazilian Literature from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a doctorate in German and Romance from the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany.

Backes supervised the editing of the works of Marx and Engels for the publishing house Boitempo of São Paulo, and is a contributor to several newspapers and magazines, both Brazilian and foreign. Backes lectured at the Universities of Freiburg and Vienna, Frankfurt, Berlin, São Paulo, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, among other cities, always debating topics from Brazilian and German literature, translation and literary criticism. He organized and prefaced dozens of works and translated — often in annotated editions — several German classics, including Saša Stanišić, Christoph Ransmayr, Ingo Schulze, Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka, Heinrich Heine, Goethe and Schiller.
