Rings, previously titled as The Ring 3D, is an upcoming American supernatural psychological horror film directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez and written by David Loucka, Jacob Aaron Estes and Akiva Goldsman. This is the third feature film in the American franchise based on the Japanese horror film Ring, following The Ring and The Ring Two. The film is produced by Laurie MacDonald.[4] The film stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe and Johnny Galecki. Principal photography began on March 23, 2015 in Atlanta. The film will be released on October 28, 2016.

Plot

Julia is a high school student whose college boyfriend, Holt, has grown distant. Fearing they’re drifting apart, she travels to see him and finds out that he’s part of a club of college students who pass Samara’s tape between each other. Julia discovers Holt watched the cursed tape six and a half days ago, meaning that by the end of the day, he would die. The curse is what brought them back together, but it’s also what threatens to kill them.[5]

Cast

Production

Paramount Pictures announced the initially titled The Ring 3D with F. Javier Gutiérrez directing.[7] In August 2014, Paramount was in talks with Akiva Goldsman to write a third draft of the screenplay, previously worked on by David Loucka and Jacob Aaron Estes.[8] In November, Gutiérrez posted an Instagram photo that showed that the current title of the sequel is Rings.[9] On January 16, 2015, Matilda Lutz was added to the cast for the lead role.[10] Alex Roe was cast for the male lead role on March 20, 2015.[11] Aimee Teegarden joined the cast on March 27, 2015.[12] Johnny Galecki had signed on to star in the film on April 1, 2015, he would be playing Gabriel, a professor who mentors and helps both Holt and Julia.[13] The film had been rumored to be a prequel, however Gutierrez had stated that was not true and that the film is taking place 13 years after the events of The Ring.[14]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on March 23, 2015 in Atlanta and wrapped in June 2015.[4][15]

Release

Paramount Pictures set a release date for November 13, 2015.[16] However, in September 2015, the film was pulled from the schedule.[17] In October 2015, Paramount rescheduled the film a release date for April 1, 2016.[18] On February 17, 2016, the film was rescheduled to a October 28, 2016 release date to take the place of Paramount's previous October horror release staple, the Paranormal Activity series, which ended in 2015 with Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.[19]

Possible Sequels

Speaking at CinemaCon, Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said that should the film prove successful, more sequels could recur annually taking the place of Paramount's Paranormal Activity series.[20]
