Edwardstone is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. The parish contains the hamlets of Mill Green, Priory Green, Round Maple and Sherbourne Street, and the Edwardstone Woods, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

History

Edwardstone was listed in the Domesday Book as Eduardestuna.[2] Edwardstone Priory was a priory in Priory Green, Edwardstone and was founded by Peter, Bishop of Winchester during the reign of King John,[3] the priory was a cell to Abingdon monastery, before the monks resident were moved to Colne Priory.[4]

Listed buildings

  • Edwardstone's parish church, St Mary's, is a Grade 1 listed building.
  • Priory Green contains four Grade 2 listed buildings, the Barn to the North of Lynn's Hall,[5] Lynn's Hall,[6] Priory Cottage,[7] and Priory Green Cottage.[8]
  • Mill Green has three Grade II listed buildings, all timber-framed and plastered houses, Earls Cottages, Mill End Green and Moat Farm Cottage.[9][10][11]
  • There are four Grade II listed buildings in Round Maple, all timber-framed and plastered: Flushing Farm, an 18th or early 19th century building;[12] Little Thatch, a renovated 17th to 18th century single-storey building;[13] Quicks Farm, a house with a red brick front, gable ends;[14] and Seasons, a single-storey thatched building with attics.[15]
