Historical significance
- Czechoslovakia split into two countries: both Czech Republic and Slovakia sent representatives.
- Croatia made it to the semi-finals for the first time, placed as a finalist, and received the "Queen of Europe" award.
- This is the first time that no European or North American country made it to the final 3.
- This is the first that a contestant who received the "Queen of Caribbean" award won the Miss World title.
- All Latin American countries (except Brazil, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela) introduced themselves in Spanish.
- Curaçao, Italy, Japan, and Turkey introduced themselves in their native languages.
- Aruba, Bermuda, Curaçao, Israel, Mauritius, Holland, Paraguay, and Sri Lanka entered the Parade of Nations on stage.
- During the evening gown competition a part of the dress worn by Miss USA got caught in her heel.
- Half the number of countries which made it into the semi-finals, were not in the semi-finals last year: Philippines (1986), Korea and Sweden (1988), France and Jamaica (1991), and Croatia (first time since its debut in 1992, finishing in fourth place).
- Mauritius (Viveka Babajee), who later became a prominent actress in India, committed suicide on 26 June 2010 at her Bandra residence in Mumbai, India. She also competed in the 1994 Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines where she ranked among the top 25 but failed to be a semi-finalist by only 0.236 marks and got involved in the infamous Metro Manila Film Festival.
- Philippines makes their highest performance since being first runner-up in 1973, and last seen at the top 10 in 1986.
