The National Institute of Technology Goa (also known as NIT Goa or NITG) is an engineering college in the Indian state of Goa. It was founded in 2010 being one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance. It admitted its first batch of students in 2010-11.

History

The NITG is one of ten newly set up NITs [2] during the 11th Five Year Plan by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD).[3] The institute was to be set up using Rs 250 crore provided by central government. The first batch of students was admitted and academic activities of NIT Goa were started in the year 2010-11. During its initial years, NIT Goa was mentored by National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal [4] and the Goa State Government had proposed that 50% of the seats in this Institute should be reserved for State of Goa. However, the Union HRD ministry wants Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshwadweep students to be grouped with Goa students for the 50% reservation.[5]

Campus

The campus is located at Farmagudi, Ponda approximately 29 km southeast of Panaji, the capital of Goa and it is a temporary campus. The state of Goa is well connected by road ways, rail ways and air ways with various parts of the country. At present NIT Goa is temporarily accommodated and functioning in the Goa Engineering College (GEC) Campus located at Farmagudi, Goa. For the permanent campus, an area of 300 acres, spanning from Cuncolim to Balli, was identified by the state but the project ran into trouble when locals objected to the proposal as 50% exclusive reservation was not promised for Goan students. The former Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Manohar Parrikar reiterated that no land will be given to the institute if 50% reservation is not provided for Goan students.[6] The Government of India finally decided to reserve 50 per cent of the seats exclusively for Goan students in the National Institute of Technology, Goa from academic year 2012-13.[7][8]

Administration

As an institute with university status, NITG operates with complete autonomy in financial, academic and administrative matters. The institute's Board of Governors manages the institute. The board has representatives from the Government of India, Government of Goa, All India Council for Technical Education, University Grants Commission, the institute's faculty and illustrious Indian scientists or technologists.

NIT Goa awards undergraduate B.Tech in various engineering fields in a four year programme.The institute has 3 departments presently and support centres with 298 students,19 faculty members and 17 members of the support staff.

Admissions policy

The policy for student admissions to the NIT Goa is the same as that for the existing NITs i.e. through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination ranks.The Institute admits students into the B.Tech degree program on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination JEE(Main) and the scheme of Direct Admission to Students Abroad (DASA) with an intake of 30 students in each branch. Fifty percent of the seats are reserved for students of Goa and the remaining seats are open to the students across the country, excluding Goans, with reservations as per Government of India Norms.To begin with, MHRD allocated an annual intake of 90 students to NIT Goa, 30 students in each branch.

Facilities

Currently, a three storey building inside the Goa Engineering College(GEC) campus is renovated and refurbished with various classrooms, laboratories, administrative section and a conference hall. Each classroom, laboratory and conference hall possess advanced facilities such as multimedia projectors and internet. Also a section of GEC has been allocated by the state government to house few classrooms and laboratories for NITG till it gets its new campus.

A library and computer centre were set up exclusively for NIT Goa students, while hostel and dining facilities have also been provided on the campus. Two cafeterias and facilities for sports and games have been created.[9]

Student life

National Institute of Technology Goa, like all other NITs in India, enrolls students from all the 29 States and 7 Union Territories. Every year, students are selected into the Institute based on their AIEEE Ranks, and the category they belong to. The competition is stiff; only roughly 50,000 students out of the 14,00,000 students appearing for the exam get selected into NITs and IITs through a two -tier common admission test called the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which ensures that the cream of the nations engineering aspirants are admitted. 6 seats have been allocated for students under Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA).Since 2010 when it became a centrally funded institution, NITG has opened doors to students from all over the country. Students involve in technical activities, as well as cultural events supported by one of the many student run clubs and organisations on campus. Following the amendments made in the reservations made in 2012, the home state of Goa has 50% seats exclusively reserved for the Goan students.

Presently, 298 students are enrolled in the 3 B.Tech programmes of NIT Goa, a) Computer Science and Engineering - 97 students b)Electronics and Communication Engineering -107 students c)Electrical and Electronics Engineering - 94 students
