New Zealand's Law Commission was established in 1986 by the Law Commission Act 1985.[4][5] The Commission is an independent Crown entity (ICE) as defined in the Crown Entities Act 2004.[6]
The main objective of the Law Commission as declared in its founding legislation is to monitor and critically analyse the laws of New Zealand with a view to identifying—and proposing solutions to—their possible shortcomings.[7]

As of December 2015,[8] the Law Commission comprises five members:

Projects
The Commission's areas of interest include:
- Lobbying for the modernization of the formal inquiry system[12]
- Working on improving or repealing obsolete or otherwise inadequate laws[13]
- Calling for the abolition of sedition laws[14]
- Reviewing legal documents such as the Civil List Act 1979[15]
- Scrutinizing New Zealand’s legislation such as its liquor laws[16]
