History
Norlington Road Council School for boys, girls, and infants opened in 1903. In 1932 it was reorganized for senior girls, junior girls, and infants. In 1940 the school was badly damaged by German bombs during World War Two.
The junior department became mixed in 1942. In 1948 the school became a secondary modern school for boys. An extension was completed in 1964 to provide science labs and woodwork and metalwork rooms.[1] In 1968, Waltham Forest adopted the Comprehensive system and it became Norlington Junior High School for Boys, catering for 11- to 14-year-olds.
Following a Borough-wide reorganisation in the early 1980s, it adopted its current name and function.
GCSEs
In the summer of 2010, 49 per cent of pupils were achieving A* to C grades in five or more GCSEs including English and Maths. But after a “huge transformation” under the stewardship of Headteacher John Hernandez and his leadership team, 64 per cent of pupils reached that benchmark in 2012. The school once again exceeded expectation in 2015, scoring a record-breaking 64.1 per cent A* to C grades in five or more GCSEs including English and Maths. One in five pupils got five A* and A grades which is double the national average.
The results are well above the borough average in Waltham Forest (56.7 per cent) and nationally (56.6 per cent)
Headteacher John Hernandez told the Waltham Forest Guardian in August 2015: “We are very proud of the achievements of our students. This is another major step in our transformation of Norlington School as we ensure our students receive the opportunities they deserve." "Our vision for Norlington remains the same – to be recognised as a world class leader in education."
Behaviour
Behaviour of pupils at Norlington was praised at an Ofsted inspection in 2013.
An extract from their findings report reads: "Students behave well in lessons and around the school. They enjoy coming to school and are punctual to school and lessons."
