Peter Prendergast (referee)

Peter Prendergast (born September 23, 1963) is a football referee from Jamaica. A FIFA referee since January 1, 1994, his first international match was USA against Ireland, on June 9, 1996. Since then he has refereed many matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup and the Confederations Cup. He is most known for a controversial decision at the 2002 World Cup, where he did not award Marc Wilmots's 0-1 goal in the game Brazil-Belgium. He apologized to Wilmots at half-time. Brazil won the game and the World Cup. After that game also came out that Prendergast before the 2002 World Cup, during the qualifying match between Costa Rica and the United States ( 2-1 ) had already mbeen supervising a dicutable match, by among other fanciful refereeing and not whistling a pure penalty. The arbitral error of Prendergast in the game Brazil-Belgium was also one of the reasons for FIFA to rule that each country only one arbitrator may delegate to abolish.

Prendergast is bilingual, able to speak Spanish as well as his native English.
