Map of the Finger Lakes region Map of the Finger Lakes region The Finger Lakes are a chain of lakes in the west-central section of Upstate New York that are a popular tourist destination. The lakes mainly are linear in shape, each lake oriented on a north-south axis. The longest, Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake, are among the deepest in America. Both are close to 40 miles (64 km) from end to end, but never more than 3.5 miles (5,600 m) wide. Cayuga is the longest with 38 miles (61 km), but Seneca the largest in total area. Seneca is the deepest (618 feet, 188 m), followed by Cayuga (435 feet, 132 m), with the bottoms well below sea level. These largest lakes resemble the others in shape, which collectively reminded early map-makers of the fingers of a hand. The fourteen lakes located in the Finger Lakes region are: Seneca, Canandaigua, Skaneateles, Owasco, Otisco, Cayuga, Conesus, Honeoye, Hemlock, Canadice, Keuka, Oneida, Cazenovia, and Onondaga. The following counties of New York State make up the Finger Lakes region: Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates. Finger Lakes cities and larger villages are situated at the head and foot of most major lakes: Skaneateles, Auburn, Ithaca, Geneva, Watkins Glen, Penn Yan, Hammondsport and Canandaigua. These historic communities with scenic situations all are tourist destinations, as is the village of Aurora, which is situated on the east shore of Cayuga Lake, and Naples, located about five miles south of Canandaigua Lake. Chenango CR 10A (former NY 319) New York State Route 319 (formerly and currently designated by the New York State Department of Transportation as NY 319) was a short state highway from the town of Preston to the nearby city of Norwich. The route was 5.47 miles (8.80 km) long and began at an intersection with three Chenango county roads. Route 319 headed eastward into the city of Norwich and terminated at an intersection with New York State Route 12 in the downtown regions. Route 319 however, has had an influence on the history of turnpikes in the state of New York and the history of the towns it was located in, Norwich and Preston. The route was commissioned by 1931, a year after a mass renumbering of state highways in New York. The route lasted for fifty-three more years, being decommissioned in July of 1984 for a trade between the state and Chenango County. When a nearby highway was constructed, the state turned over Route 319 to Chenango County and was replaced by County Route 10A. Geneseo is the name of a town and a village in Livingston County in western New York, USA. The town's population is approximately 9,600, of which about 7,600 live in the village. The English name "Geneseo" is an anglicization of the Iroquois name for the earlier Iroquois town there, Gen-nis-he-yo (which means "beautiful valley"). The Town of Geneseo is south of Rochester, New York. Entirely contained within it is the Village of Geneseo, the county seat of Livingston County, which is located in the western part of the town at the junction of Routes 39, 63, and U.S. 20A. A portion of the village—the Geneseo Historic District—was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior in 1991. Bridge in Spencerport, New York over the Erie Canal Spencerport is a village in Monroe County, New York, United States, and a suburb of Rochester, New York. The population count was 3,559 at the 2000 census. The Village of Spencerport is within the Town of Ogden and is a village on the Erie Canal. More anniversaries... Cazenovia Lake Cazenovia Lake is a lake in New York, United States. Cazenovia, New York is located southeast of the lake. The lake is roughly 4 miles (6.5 km) long and 0.5 mile (1 km) wide. It is 65 feet (20 m) at its deepest point. Cazenovia Lake is drained from its south-east corner which flows into Chittenango Creek about 1/2 mile (800 m) to the east. Chittenango then flows north, over Chittenango Falls and eventually into Oneida Lake's south shore in Bridgeport. The north end of the lake is very weedy & swampy, almost impossible to motor through. The lake resides in a valley created by sub-glacial runoff during recession of North American continental glaciers at the end of the last ice age. Cazenovia Lake's Native American name is "Owahgena," which means "lake of the yellow perch." The lake's USGS elevation is 1,200 feet (366 m) above sea level. Cazenovia Lake has been populated by Zebra Mussels, a foreign invader from Russia. Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism, and an important religious and political figure in the United States during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1827, Smith began to gather a religious following after announcing that he had discovered and was translating a set of golden plates describing a visit by Jesus to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, near Manchester, New York. He published these in 1830 as the Book of Mormon. The plates' title page indicated the book was to be entitled the Book of Mormon: An account written by the hand of Mormon, upon plates taken from the Plates of Nephi. Translation was completed around July 1, 1829, and the Book of Mormon was published in Palmyra on March 26, 1830, with the financial assistance of Martin Harris. Smith also organized a denomination of restorationist Christianity, began preparing a new Bible translation, and directed followers to the western outpost of Jackson County, Missouri, where he planned to establish a Mormon utopian society.
