Odisha is a state located on the east coast of India, by the Bay of Bengal. It is bound by West Bengal to the north-east, Jharkhand to the north, Chattisgarh to the north-west and Andhra Pradesh to the south. The region that is now Odisha was a stronghold of Buddhism and ruled by a number of kingdoms in ancient times, notable among which was Kalinga. Under British rule, the region was divided between the presidencies of Madras and Bengal and the Central Provinces. These regions were united to form the province of Odisha on April 1, 1936. Odisha is famous for its temples such as the Jagannath temple at Puri and Sun temple at Konark and for its beaches. The western part of Odisha is hilly and covered by forests inhabited by Adivasis. Khonds, or Kandhs are an aboriginal tribe of India, inhabiting the tributary states of Orissa and Srikakulam, in the Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. Their main divisions are into Kutia, or hill Khonds and plain-dwelling Khonds; the landowners are known as Raj Khonds. Their religion is animistic, and their pantheon includes eighty-three gods. They have given their name to the Khondmals, a subdivision of Angul district in Orissa. Sanjukta Panigrahi (24 August 1944 – 24 June 1997) was a dancer of India, who was the foremost exponent of Indian classical dance Orissi. Sanjukta was the first Oriya girl to embrace this ancient classical dance at an early age and ensure its grand revival. In recognition of her contribution to dancing and associated activities, she was honoured with one of India's highest civilian awards the, Padma Shri (1975). She is also recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1976. Apart from presenting Orissi performances in different parts of India, Sanjukta Panigrahi has been a part of Government’s cultural delegation to different countries, including to the USA and the Philippines (1969), United Kingdom (1983), Israel, Delphi International Festival in Greece (1989). She has also performed in France for eleven weeks, and participated there in the International Music Festival at Paris.

It was built in red sandstone (Khandolite) and black granite by King Narasimhadeva I (1236-1264 CE) of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. The temple is one of the most well renowned temples in India and is a World Heritage Site.
