Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania and its metropolitan area ranks as the largest in both Appalachia and the Ohio River Valley while being the 22nd largest urban area in the United States. Pittsburgh is dominated by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers which form the Ohio River. This strategic juncture was a major site of the North American theater of the Seven Years' War, with Great Britain winning control in 1758 to establish Fort Pitt in honor of "The Great Commoner", William Pitt. Following the American Revolution, the area grew as an important transportation center and primary gateway to the American frontier. 19th century coal and iron production made Pittsburgh into the world leader of steel and by 1910 the city was the eighth largest in the United States. With the collapse of American industries in the 1980s, Pittsburgh lost population but has successfully transitioned its economy into a world leader of healthcare, technology, education, and financial services. Pittsburgh is known colloquially as "The Steel City", for its continued leadership in steel production, as well as "The City of Bridges" for its world record 466 structures. The city's official colors of black and gold are so symbolic that all pro-sports teams from the area, the Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers have also adopted them. Multiple publications have named Pittsburgh the "most livable city" in the United States for its low crime, affordability, and plentiful educational, cultural, and recreational amenities with its skyline vistas ranked by USA Today as second only to the Grand Canyon. Wonder Boys is a 2000 feature film based on the 1995 novel of the same title by Michael Chabon. Directed by Curtis Hanson, it stars Michael Douglas as professor Grady Tripp, a novelist who teaches creative writing at an unnamed Pittsburgh university. He has been unable to finish his second novel, his young wife has left him, and he is sleeping with his boss’s wife (Frances McDormand), who is also the Chancellor of the university. Grady's editor (Robert Downey Jr.) is in town to take a look at the book and becomes interested in a book that a student (Tobey Maguire) from Grady's creative writing class has just completed. Wonder Boys was filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, including locations at Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, and Shady Side Academy. Other Pennsylvania locations included Beaver, Rochester and Rostraver Township. The film reunited Katie Holmes and Maguire, who had appeared together three years earlier in The Ice Storm. Jeffrey Lynn "Jeff" Goldblum (born October 22, 1952) is an actor originally from the Pittsburgh suburb of West Homestead. Goldblum began his career in the mid-1970s and since then he has appeared in major box-office successes including Jurassic Park (two films), Independence Day and The Fly. From 2009 onwards he has starred as Detective Zach Nichols on the USA Network's crime drama series Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In 2006, Goldblum returned home to film Pittsburgh on location around the city, including a command performance at Heinz Hall. African Elephant at the Pittsburgh Zoo The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is one of only six major zoo and aquarium combinations in the United States. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Highland Park, the zoo opened in 1898 and sits on 77 acres (310,000 m2) of park land where it exhibits over 4,000 animals representing 475 species, over 70 of which are threatened or endangered. The zoo also participates in 64 Species Survival Plans. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh. The team belongs to the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League. Founded in 1933, the Steelers are the fifth-oldest franchise in the NFL and the oldest franchise in the AFC. Pittsburgh has won more Super Bowl titles (six), won more AFC Championship Games (eight) and played in (fifteen) and hosted more (eleven) conference championship games than any other NFL team. With the exception of the 1960s which featured only three Super Bowls, the Steelers have appeared in at least one Super Bowl in every decade of the contest. The Steelers won their most recent championship, Super Bowl XLIII, on February 1, 2009.
