Roger Dion (geographer)
Roger Dion (28 October 1896 – 19 September 1981) was a French geographer and historian.
Biography
Roger Dion was born in Argenton-sur-Creuse (Indre), where his father was a justice of the peace.[1] He attended secondary school at the Rollin College in Paris.[2] From 1913 to 1915, he prepared for the competitive examination for the École normale supérieure at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He was mobilized in 1916. He entered the École normale supérieure in 1919.[1] After receiving a diploma of higher studies on the natural region of the Loire Valley in the country of Blois (1920), he obtained the agrégation in 1921.[1]
In 1934, he defended his thesis on the Loire Valley.[1] He was then appointed to the University of Lille (Nord) and then, in 1945, to the Sorbonne; in 1948, he was elected to the chair of historical geography at the Collège de France,[1] which he held for twenty years.[lower-alpha 1] He had several children, including Denis Dion, Pierre Dion, Rémi Dion, Françoise Dion, who became Jacquin, and Anne Marie Dion.
He died at the age of 84 at Neuilly-sur-Seine in the Hauts-de-Seine department.
