Roger Schmidt (born 13 March 1967) is a German football manager and a former player.

Managerial career

Schmidt was manager of Delbrücker SC from 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2007.[1]

Schmidt was appointed manager of Preußen Münster in May 2007.[2] Schmidt officially started the position on 1 July 2007.[2] Schmidt was sacked on 21 March 2010.[3]

Schmidt became manager of Paderborn 07 on 1 July 2011.[4]

On 24 June 2012 he was named new manager of Red Bull Salzburg succeeding Ricardo Moniz.[5] In his second season in charge he led Red Bull Salzburg to their second title in three years. He also led them to the round of sixteen of the UEFA Europa League before being beaten by Basel 2–1 in the second leg to lose the match on aggregate after drawing the first game 0–0. On 25 April 2014, Bayer Leverkusen hired Schmidt to become the head coach at the start of the 2014–15 season.[6]

On 21 February 2016, Schmidt was sent off by the referee in a game against Dortmund after waving off a possible incorrect (not in the right place) free kick that led to a goal for Dortmund, the only goal of the game. Schmidt initially refused to leave, causing the referee to suspend the game and lead the players off the field, causing an eight-minute delay, before the game resumed without Schmidt on the field.[7]
