The year 2013 was the 3rd year in the history of the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship (SUPERKOMBAT), a kickboxing promotion based in Romania. 2013 started with SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes 1 and ended with SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix 2013 Final. All the events have been broadcasts through television agreements with Eurosport and Fight Now TV in the United States (from September 26).[1]

Background

The event took place in Opatija, Croatia and featured fighters from the region, with the rest being from around Europe. These fighters from the likes of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia were joined by some of the selected fighters from SUPERKOMBAT tryouts.[2]

SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes 2 was a kickboxing event held by the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship on March 23, 2013 at the Ginásio Milton Feijão in São Paulo, Brazil.[3]

Background

The event featured a four-man heavyweight tournament, with the winner qualifying for the SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix. The tournament saw Robson Rocha fighting Edson Lima in one semi final, with Felipe Micheletti fighting Argentina's Rogélio Ortiz in the other semi final. There was also a 75 kg fight to qualify for the WGP as well. Bellator veteran Thiago Michel was in the bout against Romanian SUPERKOMBAT veteran Miodrag Olar. Brazil's best 85 kg kickboxer Alex Pereira was back in action after his fight at It's Showtime 60.[3]

Background

The first installment of the SUPERKOMBAT 2013 World Grand Prix kicked off on April 6 in Oradea, Romania, featuring the return of Bogdan Stoica, Benjamin Adegbuyi and Alexandru Lungu, and the first round of the SUPERKOMBAT tournament. The heavyweight tournament on the card saw Muamer Tufekčić against Corrie Robbins in one semi final and Jairzinho Rozenstruick vs. Nikolaj Falin in the other semi final. The reserve fight pitted Vladimir Toktasynov against Chris Cooper.[5]

SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes 3 was a kickboxing event held by the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship on May 10, 2013 at the Gasometer in Vienna, Austria.[6]

Background

The concept of the event was Azerbaijan vs. Europe and the fight card saw 12 fights. The main event saw Zabit Samedov in action two weeks before his rematch against Badr Hari, as he took on Wiesław Kwaśniewski in a heavyweight contest. As well, SUPERKOMBAT tryouts selectee Janosch Nietlispach was on the card, along with SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes and SUPERKOMBAT tournament winner Muamer Tufekčić. Other names on the card included rising young prospect Alim Nabiyev, and Romanian Cristian Milea.[6]

A four-man heavyweight tournament took place, featuring Nikolaj Falin vs. Frank Muñoz, and Sebastian Ciobanu vs. Vladimir Toktasynov. The winner moved on to the Final Elimination event, joining Muamer Tufekčić. Also featured were the highly popular Cătălin Moroșanu and Benjamin Adegbuyi among others.[7]

SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix IV 2013 was a kickboxing event held by the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship on October 12, 2013 at the Sala Chauncey Hardy in Giurgiu, Romania.[12]

Background

The promotion continued with the World Grand Prix series with the fourth event that qualified one man for the SUPERKOMBAT WGP Final Elimination at the end of this year. Outside of the tournament there were some big superfights, including Damián García vs. James Wilson as well as Sebastian Ciobanu in action and a really great fight between Amir Zeyada and Bogdan Stoica.[12]

SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix 2013 Final Elimination was a kickboxing event held by the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship on November 9, 2013 at the Sala Sporturilor Olimpia in Ploiești, Romania.[14]

Background

The event saw four spots for SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix tournament solidified as winners of tournaments past squared off for a spot in the SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix 2013 Final.[14]

Frank Muñoz replaced injured Sebastian Ciobanu in the tournament. Undefeated since 2008, Ondřej Hutník, one of the top fighters of super cruiserweight division faced French Massinissa Hamaili in an eliminatory title fight. In the second eliminatory fight of the night, Igor Bugaenko and Jorge Loren tried to become the official challenger of SUPERKOMBAT Cruiserweight Champion Bogdan Stoica. After an 11 months break, Raul Cătinaș made his comeback fighting in the co-main-event against Ricardo van den Bos. In the last fight of the night, promotion's star Cătălin Moroșanu, one of the greatest brawlers in the world, faced Daniel Lentie.[14]

SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix 2013 Final was a kickboxing event held by the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship on December 21, 2013 at the Patinoarul Artificial in Galați, Romania.[15]

Background

The final tournament featured four heavyweights, there were two Champions crowned for both Cruiserweight and Super Cruiserweight with a Stoica brother in each fight. Also on the card were some SUPERKOMBAT mainstays, such as the super heavyweight bout featuring Alexandru Lungu as well as two very interesting heavyweight bouts: Benjamin Adegbuyi vs. Pavel Zhuravlev and Raul Cătinaș vs. Paul Slowinski.[15]
