Deaths | Tony McDade |
On May 27, 2020, after 11 a.m.,[2] a 38-year-old African-American[3][4] transgender man, Tony McDade,[4][5] was fatally shot in the Leon Arms apartment complex by an officer of Tallahassee Police Department,[6] following a fatal stabbing incident in the near-by Saxon Street.[1][7][8] Early reports of the incident described McDade as a "woman", and on May 28, the police department described McDade as a woman who "identified as a man".[1][9][7][4]
An eyewitness report has contradicted statements by the Police Department[10] that the victim of the shooting was armed with a gun.[6][11][12]
Persons involved
- Malik Jackson, a 21-year-old, who was fatally stabbed[13]
- Tony McDade, (born Natosha McDade) a 38-year-old African American transgender man[4] On the morning of the incidents, McDade stated on a facebook live video[14] that he would get revenge on some men who had attacked him the day before.[4]
- An unnamed officer of TPD, who was placed on administrative leave following the incident[3]
Investigations
On May 27, investigations were launched into the stabbing incident, and the officer-involved shooting.[1][3][8]
Reactions
Separate vigils took place for both victims on May 28,, Jackson and McDade.[13].[2][1] McDade's was organized by the Tallahassee Community Action Committee, to draw attention to the three police-related deaths (McDade, Wilbon Cleveland Woodard, and Mychael Johnson), since Lawrence Revell assumed the office of Chief of Police in December 2019.[2][1][15]
On May 27, a petition was created to publicize the case, and for McDade to be recognised as a transgender man in reports and official statements.[5]
