Smith, Alberta
Smith is a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada within the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124.[1] It is located on Highway 2A, approximately 182 kilometres (113 mi) northwest of Edmonton, at the confluence of the Lesser Slave River and the Athabasca River.
History
The settlement of Smith began in 1914 after the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway had reached the present location of the hamlet. The arrival of railway resulted in subdivision of the townsite.[2]
As a result of the establishment of Smith, the previously established Village of Port Cornwall located Lua error in Module:Convert at line 272: attempt to index local 'cat' (a nil value). to the northwest, across the Athabasca River on the north shore of Lesser Slave River, began to deteriorate. Subsequently, Port Cornwall dissolved from village status on September 11, 1917.[3]
Demographics
As a designated place in the 2011 Census, Smith had a population of 218 living in 86 of its 96 total dwellings, a -4.8% change from its 2006 population of 229. With a land area of 2.25 km2 (0.87 sq mi), it had a population density of 96.9/km2 (250.9/sq mi) in 2011.[4]
