Spacehive is a United Kingdom-based civic crowdfunding website for projects that are focused on the built environment, public space, and community events. Their mission is 'to empower citizens to lead change in communities by enabling them to attract the attention and resources needed to make projects happen. Quickly. And Easily.' They have hosted 145 successful projects, resulting in total project value of £4.2 million.

Overview

Spacehive.com is the UK's crowdfunding website specifically designed for civic projects.[1] It has been live since March 2012 and has successfully funded over £4.2m for projects ranging from a giant water slide down a high street in Bristol[2] to a community centre in Glyncoch, a deprived ex-mining town.[3]

Spacehive was founded in 2011 by Chris Gourlay, a former Sunday Times journalist who specialised in architecture and planning stories.[4]

Supported by the Big Lottery Fund, Business in the Community and the BPF[expand acronym] and co-designed by Deloitte, the social enterprise maximises funding sources by allowing cash raised through the site to be combined with grants and other funding streams. People are only charged if the projects hit their targets.

Spacehive offers bespoke project management tools for public space initiatives. Each project is also verified by partner organisation Locality[5] to ensure they are viable before they start funding.

Rewards

Unlike other crowdfunding sites that attract backers with material rewards, Spacehive projects offer rewards in the form of things such as neighbourhood enhancement, improved sense of community, and increased business to the area.

Awards

  • Winner, Big Venture Challenge[6]
  • Top 50, New Radicals 2014[7]
  • Winner, Big Society Awards 2014[8]
