Stansted Airport railway station serves London Stansted Airport in Essex, England.

It is situated at the end of a short branch from the West Anglia Main Line. The branch was constructed at a cost of £44 million and opened in 1991 by British Rail, to coincide with the completion of the airport's new terminal building. The station was built as a through station for a possible future extension of the line towards Braintree, though a hotel since built immediately to the east of the station now precludes this.

Layout

Platforms 1 and 3 run the full length of the station and are used for Stansted Express and Cambridge services. The shorter Platform 2 is between these and is used for CrossCountry services.

In December 2011 platform 1 was extended to accommodate two trains simultaneously in combinations of up to 16 coaches, and platform 2 was extended to accommodate four-coach Class 170 trains.

Services

The principal service to Stansted Airport is the Stansted Express, a dedicated airport link service from London Liverpool Street operated by Abellio Greater Anglia, which runs every 15 minutes. Abellio Greater Anglia also operates trains to/from Cambridge.

The station is also served by CrossCountry, who operate an hourly service to Birmingham New Street, via Cambridge, Peterborough and Leicester.

Local services to Liverpool Street and all services Stratford were withdrawn in December 2011, however Stansted Express plans to introduce direct services to Stratford from 2019.
