Technical University of Liberec is a university located in the city of Liberec, Czech Republic. The university has undergone great transformation in its history of almost sixty years. When it was founded it was called the Institute of Mechanical Engineering in Liberec, and its original classrooms were located in the attics of the F. X. Šalda Grammar School. These later served as an accommodation for teachers, and it was here that the first plans and ideas arose concerning the later form and direction of the college. The gates were opened to the first 259 students on October the 1st 1953.

Today, the university has 6 faculties and two specialized institutes:

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Textile Engineering, Faculty of Science-Humanities and Education, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Faculty of Mechatronics, Informatics and Inter-Disciplinary Studies, Institute of Health Studies, Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation

Academics

The university offers courses in the humanities and sciences, as well as many technical subjects. Students can obtain a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree, in addition to a university-level education. The Technical University of Liberec is a medium-sized institution.

Science and Research

The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation has been a part of the Technical University of Liberec since 2012. Its 19 specialized laboratories aim to contribute to regional development and are traditionally oriented towards technical industries. Research programs focus on materials research and engineering, emphasizing applications.

Neisse University

Neisse University is a unique inter-regional project between three allied universities — Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz, Politechnika Wroclawska and the Technical University of Liberec. It is available to Bachelor's degree students of Information and Communication Management course at Faculty of Economics. Students of this program spend one year at each university, experiencing different academic and cultural environments.

Accommodation

Residence halls are among the best equipped in the nation, with facilities such as high-speed internet connectivity. The university offers accommodation in two areas of the town: Harcov and Vesec.

Harcov halls have a higher concentration of university students. The area comprises six blocks - labelled A-F, a canteen, conference facilities, sports centers, three student clubs and other amenities. It was renovated in 2009 for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009, which took place between February 18 and March 1. The Harcov halls secured the first position in the Student's Residences of the Year Competition in 2011. Vesec halls are in a more remote part of the city. However, they offer a wide range of sports facilities, a canteen, a multimedia lounge and a branch of the Regional Research Library for its residents.

Sports Center

Students participate in sports and other activities, including tennis, football, badminton, wall-climbing, rope center, mini-golf, beach volleyball and spinning. University sports are under the administration of the Academic Sports Center, which is a part of the Faculty of Sciences, Humanities and Education.
