Towong is a bounded rural locality of the Shire of Towong local government area in Victoria, Australia. Towong is on the Murray River close to Corryong. At the 2006 census, Towong had a population of 281.[1]
History
Towong Post Office opened on 10 January 1882 and closed in 1994.[2]
Upper Murray Football League
Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. The town had a football team involved with the Upper Murray Football League an Australian Rules football competition which began in 1893. Towong FC played its first season in 1904 after the team relocated from Khancoban, NSW. At the start of the 1905 season the changed their name to Towong Wanderers FC. After only spending two seasons at Towong they relocated once again to Thowgla, Vic (1906–1907) before returning to Khancoban, NSW in 1908.
Towong Turf Club
Towong is home to the historic Towong Turf Club, hosting thoroughbred horse racing since 1871. Currently Country Racing Victoria schedules two race meetings per year at the venue, the Towong Cup meeting (traditional held in early March) & the Squizzy Taylor Dash meeting (traditional held in late December).
