History
trivago GmbH was conceived in 2004[2] and launched in 2005 by the three founders in Düsseldorf, Germany: Peter Vinnemeier, Malte Siewert, and Rolf Schrömgens.[3]
The United Kingdom platform was launched in 2006 and in 2007 the website launched platforms in Spain and France. A year later, Poland and Sweden were added and the company received $1.14 million in Series B funding from the British company HOWZAT media LLP.[4][5] In 2009, the first non-European platforms were made available in the U.S., China, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico.[3]
On December 21, 2012, Expedia bought 61.6% of trivago in a combined cash and stock deal worth €477 million (approximately $630 million).[1] Since then, trivago has grown 222% and now employs over 950 people. On February 02, 2016 trivago announced its plans for a new global campus in Düsseldorf which will accommodate around 2000 people in 2018..

Company Philosophy
trivago was founded on the belief that individual people are the key to company success. The idea was that when you challenge yourself, and continually learn and grow as an individual, happiness and success come naturally. This way of thinking lead to the establishment of 6 core values which influence and shape the working environment and employees at trivago. The 6 values are: Trust, Authenticity, Fanatic Learning, Unwavering focus, Power of Proof and Entrepreneurial passion.[6]
Many working conditions at trivago have been shaped by the core values, the most unconventional being the idea of self-determined working hours. This idea is fully promoted by the founders and is lived throughout the company. The idea was conceived as a rebellion against the standard 9-5 working day that the founders believed was outdated and not productive. "This link between working hours and productivity is a product of the industrial age. Back then, people worked on an assembly line and if you worked for 4 hours, you were twice as productive as if you had of worked for 2. At some point, someone took this working model and transferred it directly to today's work environment - without considering if this model actually made sense to today's work. I don't believe it makes sense at all."[7]
