Young Magic are an experimental soul music group from Brooklyn, New York. The band consists of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Melati Malay and Isaac Emmanuel.[1] The band are known for collecting field recordings from around the world and incorporating them into their studio albums.[2]

Musical history

Original members Melati Malay, Michael Italia and Isaac Emmanuel met in New York City during 2010. After separately traveling abroad and recording material, the group rented a space above a speakeasy in Brooklyn during 2011 and began collaborating.[3][4] Melati Malay was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Michael Italia and Isaac Emmanuel in Australia.[3] The band began touring in Europe and North America after releasing a series of limited edition 7" in 2011, and released their debut full-length, Melt, on Carpark Records on February 14, 2012[5][6]

The band is well known for their percussive, cinematic musical style, and for releasing eclectic mix-tapes in collaboration with London based visual artist Leif Podhajsky.[7][8]

Melt

Young Magic's debut album Melt was recorded in a variety of international locations including Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Spain, Germany, Iceland, Australia and the UK whilst band members travelled independently and documented their experience.[9] The music combines field recordings from these locations and original recordings with rare soul and psychedelic samples.[2] The New York Times described Melt as "lush and immersive... summons and elusive mood of longing among the sonic wonderment." The BBC described the album "like a beat poet racked by drink addiction; music that waxes and wanes, and explodes; and a great spirit which, rather than confine itself to basements and bedsits, aims its sights on the heavens. An exquisite new breed to behold."[1]

In 2012, Montreal based duo Purity Ring sampled the lead vocals from Young Magic's "You With Air" on their song "Grandloves" from the album Shrines (4AD).[10] In 2013, Young Magic opened for Purity Ring on their North American tour and also made festival appearances at Austin Psych Fest, Noise Pop Festival and The Brooklyn Museum.

Breathing Statues

The band's sophomore album, Breathing Statues, was released on May 6, 2014 on Carpark Records.[11] A stream of the album was announced by The Fader one week prior to the album's official release, which they wrote was made "in Morocco, France, the Czech Republic, Australia and Iceland. The duo recorded wherever they could while on tour, finishing up in their New York studio."[12]

Critical reception to Breathing Statues has largely centered on the band's cinematic direction.[13] Q Magazine described the band's second album as "Alternately dreamlike and arresting, they've discovered a formula that realizes the sonic sorcery always suggested by their name" [14] and the The 405 as "A more cohesive body of work, it demonstrates maturity, and a confidence in their passion for detail, preferring to construct layers, textures and cinematic soundscapes.'"[13]

On April 23, 2015 the group released "Remixes Vol. 1" - a charity focused pay-as-you-feel album with contributions by Teebs, Matthewdavid, The Acid, Mark McGuire and Roland Tings. All proceeds for the album were donated to the Aboriginal Benefits Foundation, an organization working on art and health projects in Indigenous Australian communities.[15]

The band currently tours with Bolivian born, New York based percussionist Daniel Alejandro Siles Mendoza.[16]

The band's LP artwork is designed by London based art director Leif Podhajsky.[17]
