Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian (Russian: Юрий Цолакович Оганесян, Armenian: Յուրի Հովհաննիսյան; born 14 April 1933 in Rostov-on-Don) is a Russian nuclear physicist of Armenian descent. He and his team discovered the heaviest elements in the periodic table. [1][2]
Oganessian is the scientific leader of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) in Dubna. [3]
In 2009, scientists in the United States of America confirmed Oganessian's team's discovery of flerovium over a decade before.[4] He is an acknowledged world-leader in the field of synthesizing and exploring new elements.[citation needed]
