What is In-Progress Pokemon?
In-Progress Pokemon is my name for the concept of exploring how Pokemon might look if they physically transitioned from one evolutionary stage to another. Basically: if Pokemon grew rather than evolved. The “transitional stages” that I illustrate aren’t meant to be taken as actual additional evolutionary stages; rather, as a snap-shot in time while the Pokemon is growing or transitioning between each evolutionary stage. The flavor text/descriptions help to bridge the evolutionary gaps as well, and they’re named for fun.

New art is posted Monday and/or Thursday as I’m able to. I have twice daily reblogs of older work. If you’d prefer not to see those on your dash you can blacklist the tag “IPPreblog,” which I use for that purpose. You can also click on “New Art Only view” to only see posts with new artwork :)
#133.54 - Eevee’s irregular genetic make-up gives it the most variability in evolution of any other Pokemon, and it is influenced by both its environment and its relationships. Eevee who bond with other Pokemon, forming a strong friendship, are likely to evolve into Espeon if they haven’t been affected by other external influences. To begin evolving into Espeon when captured, an Eevee must instead have a deep trust and friendship with their trainer. Evident signs that evolution has begun include a splitting of the tail and a budding reveal of a gemstone like orb developing on the forehead. These Eevee are extremely loyal to trainers whom they’ve deemed worthy; it is even said that the precognitive powers they develop are a response to the desire to protect their trainers from harm.
Named: Eevee - Psycheon - Espeon

#095 Baby - Onix’s rock-like eggs are so large and hard that they are often confused for regular boulders, making it dangerous for Trainers to sit on round rocks when they’re in mountainous Onix territory. Onix younglings break through their egg with their thick horn, which crumbles away as they age and tunnel through hard bedrock, leaving behind the hardened inner core. Unable to open their eyes after hatching, the blind young Onix navigate their surroundings by using their internal magnet. They feed on the remains of rocks destroyed by their parents, gaining mass overtime as the minerals are absorbed into their body, hardening their tough exterior. Wild Onix younglings don’t leave their parents until they reach their mature size and can withstand high underground pressures.
#095.5 - Onix are excellent burrowers, capable of moving through dense earth and rock at a speed of 50 mph - all the while feeding on large boulders. A magnent-like organ in their brain acts as a compass, so that this Pokemon never loses direction while tunneling. An Onix must live for a very long time in order to evolve naturally into a Steelix. As they age, they venture further and further into the Earth’s crust, and the pressure and heat, along with the dense minerals they eat down there – iron especially – slowly compress and harden their long serpentine body until it is harder than diamonds. [Old Version]
Named: Pebblix - Onix - Orex - Steelix
#208 Mega - Steelix are known to dwell in extreme subterranean depths, where intense heat and pressure slowly refine their iron-hard bodies. When a strong bond is formed with their trainer and they are exposed to a Key Stone and Steelixite, these Pokémon begin to channel that geological force transforming into Mega Steelix. The cells within Steelix’s body begin to crystallize, becoming stronger than any mineral and able to withstand any temperature. These crystalline structures hint at the magnetic resonance and subterranean pressure that will fully awaken in its Mega form; shed metallic scraps will to hover around their body in response. Steelix’s defensive capabilities grow even more formidable, and the latent power of Sand Force begins to activate in earnest, increasing its Ground- and Steel-type move potency in sandy environments.

#1007.? - Appearing to be the “Winged King” referred to in an old expedition journal, Koraidon are believed to be the ancient ancestors of the modern Cyclizar. Not much is know about these powerful and ferocious Pokemon, but it can be theorized how they may have evolved over time into the contemporary relative that lives alongside humans today. Koraidon possess immense strength and impressive plumage, features that would have aided them in the more dangerous and wild world of their ancient era. As seen in Ayernole, it is likely that over time, Koraidon lost their bold coloration and excessive feathering, becoming smaller and more docile as they entered into a partnership with humans. Cyclizar as we know them have a mild temperament and enjoy the mutualistic relationship they share with people. Perhaps this is an example of self-domestication? More research is necessary to draw concrete conclusions about this possible evolutionary tree…
Named: Koraidon - - Ayernole - - Cyclizar
#967.? - Appearing to be the “"Iron Serpent” referred to in fragmented records found alongside futuristic technology, Miraidon is believed to be a distant descendant of the modern-day Cyclizar. While Cyclizar is a widely domesticated and dependable partner to humans, Miraidon display a level of technological integration and power that suggests extreme adaptation to a world far beyond our own. Researchers have proposed the existence of an intermediary form, which may represent a key stage in this evolutionary journey. Unlike Cyclizar, this Pokemon is theorized to have begun developing inorganic plating and a more energy-efficient physiology, possibly as a response to an increasingly synthetic or hostile environment. Though speculative, this potential stage may have marked the beginning of the shift from partnership to independence—an evolution from companion to apex lifeform. Further study is required to determine if this path was natural, engineered… or something else entirely.

#909.5 - Fuecoco are laid-back Pokemon that do things at their own pace. They are extrememely food-motivated and love to eat. External heat is absorbed by the square scales on Fuecoco’s stomach and back, then converted into fire energy. The sheer amount of fire and caloric energy cannot be contained inside their bodies, and leaks out onto the top of their head. As they grow and produce more energy, the flames atop their head grows as well, forming into a nest-like shape. As Fuecoco age into Caimiente, and later Crocalor, their fire energy and overflowing vitality mixes together, forming into an egg-shaped fireball. Though they use the fireball as a part of their fire attacks in battle, they can be oddly doting over it.
#0910.5 - Crocalor possess an internal flame sac that has a valve connecting it to their vocal cords. As a result, they release fire with every guttural cry. Though they seem to enjoy “singing,” their voice could hardly be described as beautiful. They cannot help but release their voice as they breathe fire attacks, which becomes more destructive as they ramp up their firepower, causing opponents to take extra damage. Fire energy continues to build atop their heads until their fireball “egg” hatches, producing a fiery fledgling with its own unique soul. The presence of this companion grants a Muertodile grace, shaping its voice into a gentle but powerful force that soothes the hearts of all who hear it. The soul in the fireball is able to change its form via the power of an adult Skeledirge’s singing voice; the two rely on each other and possess a special bond.
Named: Fuecoco - Caimiente - Crocalor - Muertodile - Skeledirge

#744.5 (Midday) - Rockruff have lived closely with people since ancient times; their loyalty and friendly disposition make them ideal partners, but an experienced Trainer is necessary to properly train them through a rocky adolescence. Certain Rockruff feel a connection to the sun, and after training during the day and bathing in an abundance of solar energy, they will evolve into a distinct Midday Form. These Rockruff are generally tamer than their lunar counterparts, preferring to avoid unnecessary fights and feeling a deep appreciation and loyalty to a Trainer who accepted them during their rebellious youth.
#744.5 (Midnight) - Rockruff are friendly by nature, and are considered in Alola to be a good starter Pokemon for beginner Trainers. However, their disposition grows wilder and more aggressive as they age, often overwhelming these inexperienced Trainers, resulting in their abandonment. Certain Rockruff feel a connection to the moon, and after training at night and bathing in an abundance of lunar energy, they will evolve into a distinct Midnight Form. These Rockruff live for battle, and will only trust a Trainer who can truly draw forth their true power. The thrill of battling is so powerful that it causes their eyes to glow.
#744.5 (Dusk) - It is possible for certain Rockruff to evolve into a third, rare variation. These Pokemon must possess the “Own Tempo” ability, a hereditary trait that grants them a connection to both the Sun and the Moon; as such, they are strongest at sunset, when dusk begins. These Dusk Howlith share traits of the other two forms, being regularly both calm and loyal, yet possessing a ferocious fighting spirit once a battle commences. Their temperamental nature makes them a difficult species to raise.
Named: Rockruff - Howlith - Lycanroc ⓘ

#200.5 - Misdreavus love to frighten people by playing mischievous tricks on them during the night. These Pokemon get their nourishment from the fear they absorb into their red, gem-like orbs; and despite their need to scare others, Misdreavus rarely do so with mean or dark intentions. As they age, Misdreavus will begin to shed their old orbs, and grow new, elongated orbs that can store more energy. To help give their Misdreavus enough energy to evolve, trainers can expose their Pokemon to a Dusk Stone.
Named: Misdreavus - Misshadow - Mismagius ⓘ
#987.? - Believed to be an ancient relative of Misdreavus, an article from a May issue of Occulture magazine states that Flutter Mane’s name was taken from a strange creature with a matching description that appears in the Scarlet Book; the spectral creature was said to float around the sky at night with its long hair writhing about it, believed by some to be a ghost of a pterosaur from a long-gone era. Pokescientists theorize that overtime, Flutter Mane evolved into a more docile Pokemon as they found humans to be a nutritious source of fear rather than an easy meal. In order to keep their supply of fear alive and well, they evolved to be more mischievous and frightful than truly dangerous.

#029.5 - Due to an early misunderstanding in the field, the Nidoran line was erroneously categorized as different Pokemon based on sex. Nidoran♀ possess smaller horns than the males, but their venom is extremely potent, and they must be treated with caution. Nidoran♀ barbs continue to grow slowly as they age, so if these docile Pokemon must fight, they mainly attack with bites and scratches. As they age into Nidora, they develop a docile, gentle temperament and learn to tuck away their barbs to prevent hurting friends or family. Though their barbs grow slower than Nidoro, they can emit ultrasonic cries to befuddle foes.
#030.5 - Nidorina are calm, caring Pokemon who look after young and have tight communal bonds. As they mature into Nidoqueen, their skin develops sturdy, armor-like scales that grant them increased protection from any attack. Though they still possesses needle-like, poisonous spines, as they bulk up and grow stronger they prefer to use powerful physical moves to defeat their foes. As Nidoress, they are dedicated to protecting their nest and young from predators with their life. When separated from their community, Nidorina require the energy from a Moon Stone to aid in their evolution.

#298.5 - Azurill live near water, and although they are not born as strong swimmers, they gradually get accustomed to the water by playing in the shallows at the water’s edge. Their oil-filled tail keeps them from drowning in even the strongest current, and is used in aiding their transportation; either through bouncing or by throwing it and being pulled by momentum. They thrive in group settings, and require a happy mindset and close friendships to be able to evolve. As they mature into Amarill and later Marill, they become competent swimmers.
#183.5 - Marill become strong swimmers as they age, and combined with their developing ability to inhale and store a large volume of air, are able to spend increasingly long periods of time under the water. Their hearing develops to be so acute that they can distinguish individual Pokemon inside a raging river. While their developing body pattern camouflages them from predators, Marill practice hunting and scavenging along riverbeds, stretching their flexible tail to its limit. Once they are full-grown Azumarill, these Pokemon can send virtually all day in water.
