Sobek was worshipped wherever the Nile was presenting difficulties. Sobek was the ancient Egyptian God of crocodiles and controlled the waters. Sobek’s role was to protect the pharaoh from evil but it differs with each person. He was the most popular god in Arsinoe (Crocodilopolis in Greek), and was considered the Lord of Faiyu.

Hymn to Sobek

godsofsandandwater:

To Sobek, lord of the waterways, I offer my praise.
Son of Neith, the land of the lake is yours, O Sobek,
foremost of the crocodile gods. Well honored you were
in ancient Faiyum; great temples and monuments were built
in honor of your might, many were the prayers you answered,
many the offerings given you in thanks. O god of the marsh,
lord of the seed of men, fierce-hearted guardian,
defeater of the wicked, defender of the innocent,
undoer of evils; O raging and ravening one,
fearsome of countenance, pointed of teeth,
tall-plumed one who makes the herbage green,
inspirer of reverence and awe, benevolent one
whose bounty is unending, compassionate one
whose gifts are freely given, Sobek, O watchful one
whose strike is certain, I call to you with all devotion.

T E E N A G E  G I R L S  +  M Y T H O L O G Y: Sobek

They flock in her wake; an army of teenagers who all look identical, they start their own trends, following her lead as she declares that khaki clothes are the new fashion. No, military boots. No, cropped hair. She smells of hand cream made from plant extract and seems to slip seamlessly through the day, undisturbed by the latest shenanigans. A glimmer of danger glints in her eyes, teeth as white as bleached bone, reminding others of the well-known saying: never smile at a crocodile.
