Q:
"Lester would sleep in a tree hut with his friends, and sometimes out of boredom throw stones at cars from the tree.
I've seen this sentence and I don't understand why sleep is used here, because I was taught in school that would is never used with stative verbs. Is it right to use it?

A:
You can say "would sleep", "would stay" etc. but there are two quite different possible meanings.
In this paragraph, it means "used to" or "dormía", it's an imperfect past tense activity. It could equally well be "Lester used to sleep...". As far as I know this structure using "would" has no equivalent in Spanish.
You can also use "would" like you would in Spanish to mean a conditional event that will happen depending on something else. "Lester would sleep 12 hours a day if he didn't have to work".
The difference, whether it's talking about a habitual past or conditional future, is only really evident from context, unfortunately, but this "would in the past" is quite common. Here are two more examples:
Before becoming President, Donald Trump would openly abuse women. But now he has to be a bit more discreet. -> I am talking about a real past event, nothing conditional here.
If Donald Trump wins a second term, that would be the end of the United States as a world power. -> I am talking about a possible future.
Espero que tenga sentido ;)
