There are shops that sell food. It implies a small, specialized market (to buy food to cook yourself).
For example, a cheese shop.
A restaurant is a place where you sit down and are served a meal, usually by a waiter or waitress.
I have heard people refer to McDonald's as a "fast food restaurant" but that always sounds strange to me. Restaurants are places where you are waited on.
