Beginning of school art projects

Grade 6 students finally finished their sunflowers last week. This is a fun and relatively easy project that all students can find success with. I find most 'glue lines on black paper' projects are great for all levels and abilities of students. Chalk pastels are very forgiving and easy to work with, so I tend to start out with these types of projects at the beginning of the year to help build my students' confidence in Art. In 2008, I developed a self-portrait art lesson to help students express both their inner and outer selves, combining drawing, collage, and typography. I recently updated the project to include techniques like mixing skin tones, understanding facial proportions, and depicting diverse hair textures. This week was our first week back and, boy am I tired! My class is great though...very inquisitive and eager to learn. They take their work seriously and are actively working most of the day.
