Indian dhal (shield, 19th century, steel, gold, silk-velvet, Diam. 14 3/4 in. (37.47 cm); Wt. 2 lb. 14 oz. (1304 g), Met Museum. Probably from Lahore, this is a virtuoso demonstration of koftgari, or counterfeit damascening. In this technique, the steel is crosshatched with files, and designs cut from gold or silver foil or wire are applied to the rough area and burnished in place.

Indian (Southern) madu shield, 1800s, a rare shape of Indian parring weapon, It consists of a pair of antelope’s horns attached to the shield with both tips pointing in opposite directions. The horn’s tips are protected with steel caps. This particular piece has an iron shield in a slightly convex circular shape.
