two pieces of oatmeal and raisin bars sitting on a glass plate

Matrimonial cake a sweet treat with a strange name. It's defiantly not a wedding cake , some have suggested that its name comes from " a metaphor for marriage because it has a rough top but a sweet filling and a firm base". Pretty clever, I can't take credit for making this batch but I was a willing participant! It seems to have Western Canadian origins. I just call it delicious. My sister sent me a scan of my mothers original recipe hand written in two colours. She gives credit to her…

two pieces of cake sitting on top of a glass plate

Date squares have been a favourite of both my husband's family and mine for many years. I knew that they have also in the past been referred to as Matrimonial Cake, but just recently found some history on that name. Know as Matrimonial Cake in some parts of western Canada, the wedding-related names given to the dessert made up of both smooth and rough textures are said to reflect the contrast between the easy and difficult times of marriage. Having past our 34th wedding anniversary I like…

several pieces of food sitting on top of a cutting board

This is a terrific recipe from Mom, that I removed a bit of sugar from, rediscovered on Ricardo's site, and then updated (November 2020). Apparently 'date squares' being called 'matrimonial cake' is a Canadian thing...which does make sense if you consider baking a sweet (celebratory?) treat, using only what is/was available in your pantry. We enjoyed these regularly growing up - and now my kids fight over them as well. Yum!

a pan filled with rice on top of a wooden table

I grew up eating this cake that my Auntie Ann would make for us my dear aunt passed away and one of things she left me was her cookbook which is in archival sheet protectors and very worn with age so before I get too worn with age, I will give this to the www.food.com community to enjoy! This is the cake where I fell in love with dates. I have checked this www.food.com web site for a duplicate recipe and I'm pleased to say there is not another one like this so please enjoy this cake with…

there is a piece of dessert on the plate

I posted this recipe a couple of years ago here but once again it is that time of year when our snowbird neighbours return home, bearing gifts. Once again they brought me a lovely container of dates and of course my mouth watered for these squares. And so here is the repeat recipe on Flashback Friday. Filling 3 1/2 - 4 cups pitted and chopped dates 1 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon soda Crumbs 2 1/4 cups gluten free oat flakes 1 1/4 cup Julie's…

a piece of pie sitting on top of a white plate next to a green plant

Fresh rhubarb season is almost here. I've been checking the rhubarb plants, they are growing but not quite ready to pick. So I checked my freezer and was happy to find a package of rhubarb from last season. This is a quick and easy dessert to put together. Serve warm and if you like you can top it with a scoop of frozen yogurt or ice cream and you have a wonderful dessert. 4 1/2 cups rhubarb, chopped 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 small package strawberry flavored gelatin powder 1 517 g…

some strawberries are sitting on top of a piece of cake with crumbs

Most summers I enjoy going strawberry picking at a "U Pick". The Blue Diamond Berry Farm is one of these U-Picks and they hand out recipes you can make with strawberries. This is one of these recipes which is a nice variation from the regular matrimonial cake made with dates.
