Scuff-sand with 120 grit to remove old shiny finish and roughen up surface for better paint adherence  3.  Paint on a layer of primer and then scuff-sand by hand with 220 grit. (If you’re using a high quality paint with primer + topcoat included you can skip this step!) 4. Paint! We hired a professional painter and decorator last summer for some bits of the house renovation we knew we would never get done. 

When painting the skirting boards* and door frames he gave them the lightest sand before priming them, then finished with one coat of matte paint, and then one coat of eggshell. 
Simple as that! 
No need to be sanding for hours on end, and the coat of matte is both quicker to get on and provides a great surface for the more durable eggshell. 

Knowing this has already saved me so much time as I’ve been working my way through the remainder of the decorating 🙌🏻
